Federal dirty fuels campaigner

Job Title:  Federal dirty fuels campaigner  (Full-time, Temporary position/four months)
Position reports to:  Climate and energy project director
Position Location:  Washington, D.C.

Friends of the Earth U.S. is looking for a full-time, temporary, person to act in the capacity of federal dirty fuels campaigner to join our team in defending the environment and creating a more healthy and just world. Friends of the Earth is a hard-hitting, progressive, environmental organization that pulls no punches and speaks sometimes uncomfortable truth to power. To accomplish our mission, Friends of the Earth is working at the nexus of environmental protection, economic policy and social justice to fundamentally transform the way our country and the world values people and the environment.  We are focused on reforming economic drivers such as tax and trade policy that are often used to empower corporations and government to harm the environment.

Basic function

Our current campaigns focus on clean energy and solutions to global warming, protecting people from toxic and new, potentially harmful technologies, and promoting smarter, low-pollution energy and transportation alternatives. We are seeking to hire a talented and dedicated individual to augment our efforts to stop the use of dirty fuels such as tar sands and liquid coal. 

Principal duties and responsibilities

  • Develop strategic campaign and communications strategies in conjunction with the climate and energy project director and the communications team;
  • Conduct and oversee research and analysis to develop reports and articles to educate non-governmental organizations, policymakers, and the public;
  • Develop public education and campaign materials on tar sands and other dirty fuels and global warming issues;     
  • Reach out to groups and activists within the environmental community and beyond to build a diverse coalition focused on stopping the expansion of dirty fuels;
  • Work with the climate and energy project director to develop and implement a fundraising plan.

Requirement

Four or more years of experience in policy advocacy (not necessarily environmental), organizing or legislative work at the federal or state level.

Skills and knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of legislative and executive branch process;
  • A demonstrated commitment to the environment;
  • The ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including advocacy, convening/organizing, policy development, and research, as well as to coordinate media and development staff; and
  • Knowledge of U.S. biofuels and bioenergy policy is preferred but not essential.
