Job Title: Nuclear Campaigner

For forty years, Friends of the Earth has been a leading voice in the U.S. in opposing nuclear power. In the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, it is clear that there can and must be a thorough debate on the future of nuclear power and the need to move beyond this dangerous and dirty technology to the clean renewable and efficiency technologies of the 21st century. We are seeking to hire a talented and dedicated individual to augment our efforts to educate the public about the dangers of and need to turn away from nuclear power and deal with our devastating nuclear waste problem. S/he will:
- Develop strategic campaign and communications strategies in conjunction with the Climate and Energy Project Director, Communications Director and Online Communications Manager;
- Implement an activist strategy that raises the profile and increases the public pressure around priority issues;
- Conduct and oversee research and analysis to develop reports and articles to educate non-governmental organizations, policymakers, and the public;
- Develop public education and campaign materials on nuclear power and waste issues;
- Educate members of Congress, the administration, opinion leaders, and the media about the dangers of nuclear power;
- Reach out to groups and activists within the environmental community and beyond to build a diverse coalition focused on stopping the expansion of nuclear power and shutting down existing nuclear power plants;
- Work with the Climate and Energy Project Director to develop and implement a fundraising plan.
Requirements and Special Knowledge
The position requires a college degree (BA/BS) or equivalent, a demonstrated commitment to the environment, an appreciation of Friends of the Earth’s role in the environmental movement and knowledge of nuclear, energy and/or climate change policy. Some experience in policy advocacy, or on nuclear issues at the federal or state level is strongly preferred. Knowledge and experience with the legislative process is also preferred.
The ideal candidate will have a strategic approach to both policy and politics, and a desire to have a major impact on federal policy debates through hard-hitting advocacy. The successful candidate will have the ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including advocacy, convening/organizing, policy development, and research, as well as the ability to oversee consultants, and coordinate media and development staff. The successful candidate will have the ability to work in coordination with a dedicated and passionate team of domestic staff as well as with a diverse group of coalition partners. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
