Friends of the Earth campaigns for the testing and labeling of genetically engineered food.
A few of our accomplishments include:
1) In 2004, a Friends of the Earth campaigner co-authored a peer-reviewed scientific paper that provides a comprehensive critique of the US “rubber-stamp” regulatory system for genetically engineered foods. Press Release. Paper.
2) In 2002, we alerted the public and food industry to the hazardous practice of genetically engineering (food) crops to produce drugs and industrial chemicals, initiating a public debate over the controversial practice of “biopharming.” Read More
3) In 2000, Friends of the Earth forced the federal government to withdraw an unapproved variety of genetically engineered corn (StarLink) from the food supply due to concerns it could cause food allergies. Read More

Legislation
Representative Dennis Kucinich introduced a package of bills in May 2002 to address concerns about genetically engineered foods. They require labeling, safety testing, liability for any harm, farmer protections and a fund to alleviate world hunger. See a summary of the legislation.
Biosafety Protocol
Delegates from around the world, met in Montreal Jan. 24 -28, 2000 to discuss an International Biosafety Protocol, will be forced to answer the following question: when it comes to genetically engineered organisms (GEOs), which comes first - people and the environment or free trade?
