Friends of the Earth is working to protect and promote the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS), a network of some of the most spectacular of our natural treasures. The NLCS includes national conservation areas, national monuments, wild and scenic rivers, national scenic and historic trails, wilderness areas and wilderness study areas. National treasures such as Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks and Upper Missouri River Breaks National
Monuments
, and Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (pictured here) are some of those lands.
FoE is working to conserve these lands by protecting entire ecosystems and archaeological communities by cooperating with the environmental community, the public, and members of Congress from both parties. We are working to ensure that the federal government fully funds the protection and conservation of these lands, to strengthen protections for the lands in the system, as well as seek more land for protection. June 2005 will be the five-year anniversary of the NLCS, providing opportunities for FoE and our allies to educate members of Congress and the public about the importance of protecting and expanding the 800 plus units in the NLCS system.
Friends of the Earth is working to promote and protect these rugged and diverse lands of the American West, as well as monitor the Interior Department.
