Methodology

Over the last seven years, the dirty energy subsidies identified in this report have cost taxpayers at least $26 billion. The Green Scissors Campaign estimates that over the next five years, these coal, oil, gas and nuclear handouts and tax breaks will cost another $26.6 billion.

This report calls for the elimination of spending and tax subsidies for dangerous and dirty forms of energy. The recommendations listed do not cover all such subsidies and spending. There are many other indirect and regulatory provisions that create incentives to use fossil fuels and commercial nuclear power. The recommendations would be a major step toward cleaning up energy production and a significant saving for taxpayers.
