Charitable Gift Annuities

A charitable gift annuity is a gift to Friends of the Earth from which you will receive a steady fixed income beginning either immediately or on a future date (deferred gift annuity). A charitable gift annuity is a very popular gift because of the high rate of return, which will never change after a gift is made, regardless of interest rate fluctuations. And, a charitable gift annuity is simple to establish.

A charitable gift annuity (or deferred gift annuity) can be funded with cash or with appreciated stock or mutual funds.

You would get an immediate income tax deduction for a substantial portion of the value of your gift. And, favorable taxation of annuity payments will increase the spending power of your annuity.

Your annuity rate will depend on your age at nearest birthday when you make your gift. Annuity rates for charitable gift annuities with payments beginning immediately.

Two-life annuities are also available at somewhat lower rates. You can name another individual either to receive payments along with you or after your lifetime. Or, you can establish your gift just for one or two other individuals.

    Deferred Gift Annuities

Your annuity rate will depend on your age now and the period of deferral until your payments begin. The longer your defer your payments, the higher your rate. Even though your payments are deferred, you get your income tax deduction now. This offers the best of all worlds under the new tax law – a tax deduction this year when income tax rates are at their highest, and the ability to defer income until rates go down.

Two-life deferred gift annuities are also possible.

We would be pleased to calculate your deferred gift annuity rate for any period of deferral you may want to consider.

Gift of Stock or Other Securities

Stocks and retirement plans are other mechanisms through which some people choose to support Friends of the Earth. By donating stock, donors get the satisfaction of knowing they are supporting a worthy cause while also benefiting from tax deductions. Similarly, there are ways to make sure that the taxable portion of your retirement plan goes to Friends of the Earth rather than the taxman. Or you might make Friends of the Earth the beneficiary of your retirement plans. To discuss these and other options, please contact us by phone at 866-217-8499 or via e-mail at estaaterman@foe.org.

Bequests: Including Friends of the Earth in your estate plans or will

Some people choose to set aside a certain portion of their estate for their favorite charities because they want to provide these charities with long-term support while also taking advantage of estate tax charitable deductions. If you think you might want to name Friends of the Earth in your will, you should discuss the issue with your attorney to decide between several ways the bequest can be made, including:

    • Specific Bequest: This means that you set a specific dollar amount, a specific property (such as a residence or land), or a specific percentage of your estate to give to Friends of the Earth.
    • Contingent Bequest: This means that Friends of the Earth receives all or a portion of your estate only under certain circumstances, such as having no surviving spouse or children.
    • Residual Bequest: This means that after your estate pays all debts, taxes, specific bequests, and expenses, the remaining amount (or a portion that you designate) would be given to Friends of the Earth.

    Matching Gifts

Many employers will match donations to charitable organizations. Check with your personnel office to see whether your company has a matching gift program. If it does and if your gift qualifies, your dollars for protecting the environment could mean twice as much.

To make a matching gift, just obtain a matching gift application from the appropriate person at your company. Fill out the application, remembering to give generously for the environment, and send it to us with your check. It's that easy! And you will have the satisfaction of seeing your hard-earned dollars go twice as far.
