Cruise Line Grade Methodology

Cruise Line Grading Methodology

The Cruise Line Environmental Report Card ranks 10 major cruise lines—Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Cunard Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean Int’l, and Silversea Cruises—according to three environmental criteria: Sewage Treatment, Air Pollution Reduction, and Water Quality Compliance.

  • To determine a cruise line’s Sewage Treatment grade, we compared the number of cruise ships in the cruise line that have installed advanced sewage treatment systems against the total number of the cruise line’s ships operating in the U.S.
  • To determine the Air Pollution Reduction grade for each ship in a cruise line, only ships that dock at a U.S. port that currently has shoreside power were graded.
  • To determine the Water Quality Compliance grade for ships operating in Alaska, we utilized the notices of violation issued to each cruise line by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation for individual cruise ships.
  • The grades for each of the criteria were averaged to calculate the Final Grade for each cruise line.

HOLLAND AMERICA LINE – Final Grade – "B"

Holland America Line (“HAL”) was originally founded in 1873 as the Dutch-America Steamship Company. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, HAL is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation. HAL’s fleet of 14 cruise ships carries nearly 700,000 cruise passengers each year. Eight of HAL’s ships have capacity to carry approximately 2,300 passengers and crew; its five newest ships have a capacity of 3,200 passengers.

All of HAL’s 14 cruise ships have installed advanced sewage treatment systems, resulting in a grade of A for the company’s 100% sewage treatment score. In determining the air pollution reduction grade for each cruise line, only ships that dock at a port that currently has shoreside power (thereby avoiding burning dirty fuel in port) were considered. In total, 50% of Holland’s ships that dock at a port with shoreside power are plug-in capable, giving the company a C- in this category (one of the ships HAL has equipped with shoreside power hookups, the Noordam, is not being sent to ports where shoreside power is offered, so for purposes of determining HAL’s air pollution reduction grade, the Noordam was only given half credit.). In 2008, HAL’s Westerdam was cited by Alaskan authorities for 10 violations of Alaskan water pollution standards, giving HAL an 82% for water quality compliance in Alaska, or a B+.  The Oosterdam was cited for one violation of Alaskan air pollution standards in 2008.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINES – Final Grade – “B-”

Norwegian Cruise Lines (“NCL”) was originally founded in 1966 as the Norwegian Caribbean Line. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, NCL controls nine percent of the North American market and, along with Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited, is considered one of the “big three” corporations which dominate the U.S. cruise ship market. NCL has a relatively young fleet of cruise ships; 10 of the company’s 11 ships were built within the last decade, and nearly three-quarters of those have a carrying capacity of more than 3,300 passengers and crew.

All of NCL’s 11 cruise ships have installed advanced sewage treatment systems, resulting in a grade of A for the company’s 100% sewage treatment score. In determining the air pollution reduction grade for each cruise line, only ships that dock at a port that currently has shoreside power (thereby avoiding burning dirty fuel in port) were considered. In total, 33% of NCL’s ships that dock at a port with shoreside power are plug-in capable, giving the company a D in this category. In 2008, the Norwegian Pearl was cited by Alaskan authorities for one violation of Alaskan water pollution standards, giving NCL an 88% for water quality compliance in Alaska, or an A-. The Norwegian Star was cited for two violations of Alaskan air pollution standards in 2008.

PRINCESS CRUISES– Final Grade – “B-”

Princess Cruises (“Princess”) was originally founded in 1965 and was the first of today’s modern cruise lines to focus on the leisure travel market. Headquartered in Santa Clarita, California, Princess is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation. Princess’ fleet of 18 cruise ships carry more than a million passengers each year.

Of the 17 Princess cruise ships operating in the U.S., 11 have installed advanced sewage treatment systems, resulting in a grade of C+ for the company’s 65% sewage treatment score. In determining the air pollution reduction grade for each cruise line, only ships that dock at a port that currently has shoreside power (thereby avoiding burning dirty fuel in port) were considered. In total, 85% of Princess’ ships that dock at a port with shoreside power are plug-in capable, giving the company an A- in this category (one of the ships Princess has equipped with shoreside power hookups, the Dawn Princess, is currently not being sent to ports where shoreside power is offered, so for purposes of determining Princess’ air pollution reduction grade, the Dawn Princess was only given half credit). Princess has invested approximately $4.7 million to bring shoreside electrical technology to Juneau, Alaska, so its cruise ships can plug in to the shore-based electrical grid. Princess has also invested approximately $1.7 million to develop shoreside power in Seattle, Washington, and an indeterminate amount to develop the technology in San Francisco, California.  In 2008, eight Princess cruise ships were cited by Alaskan authorities for 31 violations of Alaskan water pollution standards, giving Princess a 66% for water quality compliance in Alaska, or a C+. The Island Princess was cited for one violation of Alaskan air pollution standards in 2008.

CUNARD CRUISE LINE – Final Grade – “C-”

Cunard Cruise Line (“Cunard”) was originally founded in 1840. An American-owned, British-operated shipping company, Cunard is headquartered in Santa Clarita, California, and is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation. Cunard’s small fleet of two ships, the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Victoria, were both built between 2002 and 2007 and have 2,870 and 4,343 passenger and crew carrying capacities, respectively. A third ship, the Queen Elizabeth, is scheduled for launch in 2010.

Both Cunard cruise ships have installed advanced sewage treatment systems, resulting in a grade of A for the company’s 100% sewage treatment score. In determining the air pollution reduction grade for each cruise line, only ships that dock at a port that currently has shoreside power (thereby avoiding burning dirty fuel in port) were considered. In total, 0% of Cunard’s ships that dock at a port with shoreside power are plug-in capable, giving the company an F in this category. Neither Cunard ship traveled to Alaska in 2008.

CELEBRITY CRUISES – Final Grade – “D+”

Celebrity Cruises, (“Celebrity”) was founded in 1989. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, Celebrity is a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited (“RCCL”).  Each of Celebrity’s current fleet of eight cruise ships has a carrying capacity of more than 3,300 passengers and crew.

In 2004, Celebrity, through its parent company RCCL, made a public commitment to install advanced sewage treatment systems on all of its cruise ships by 2008, and of its eight ships, all but one (the Celebrity Mercury) have installed advanced sewage treatment systems, resulting in an A- for the company’s 88% sewage treatment score. In determining the air pollution reduction grade for each cruise line, only ships that dock at a port that currently has shoreside power (thereby avoiding burning dirty fuel in port) were considered. In total, 0% of Celebrity’s ships that dock at a port with shoreside power are plug-in capable, giving the company an F in this category. While Celebrity operated two ships with advanced sewage treatment systems in Alaska in 2008, it chose to discharge sewage from those two ships outside of Alaskan waters, thereby avoiding Alaska’s protective water quality standards, giving Celebrity an “n/a” for water quality compliance in Alaska.  In 2008, the Celebrity Mercury and the Celebrity Millennium were cited for one and two violations of Alaskan air pollution standards, respectively.

SILVERSEA CRUISES – Final Grade – “D-”

Silversea Cruises (“Silversea”) was founded in 1994. Headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Silversea describes itself as a luxury cruise line that operates four cruise ships in U.S. waters. The Silversea cruise ship fleet consists of smaller ships with carrying capacities of less than 700 passengers and crew.

Of Silversea’s four ships, only one (the Silver Shadow) has installed an advanced sewage treatment system, resulting in a grade of D- for the company’s 25% sewage treatment score. In determining the air pollution reduction grade for each cruise line, only ships that dock at a port that currently has shoreside power (thereby avoiding burning dirty fuel in port) were considered. In total, 0% of Silversea’s ships that dock at a port with shoreside power are plug-in capable, giving the company an F in this category. In 2008, Alaskan officials cited the Silver Shadow for two violations of Alaskan water pollution standards, giving Silversea a 72% for water quality compliance in Alaska, or a B-.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN INT’L – Final Grade – “F”

Royal Caribbean International (“Royal Caribbean” or “Royal”) was founded in 1997. A Norwegian/American company with headquarters in Miami, Florida, Royal Caribbean is a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited (“RCCL”).  Royal Caribbean’s fleet totals 21 cruise ships, including the largest cruise ship ever built, Oasis of the Seas. When launched in late 2009, Oasis of the Seas will be the size of a small town, accommodating more than 7,000 passengers (at capacity) and carrying a complement of close to 2,000 crew members. Nearly two-thirds of Royal cruise ships were built in the last decade, and nine of those have a carrying capacity of more than 5,000 passengers and crew.

In 2004, Royal, through its parent company RCCL, made a public commitment to install advanced sewage treatment systems on all of its cruise ships by 2008. Despite this commitment, currently, only nine, or 43%, of Royal’s 21 cruise ships have installed advanced sewage treatment systems, resulting in a grade of D for the company’s sewage treatment score.  In determining the air pollution reduction grade for each cruise line, only ships that dock at a port that currently has shoreside power (thereby avoiding burning dirty fuel in port) were considered. In total, 0% of Royal’s ships that dock at a port with shoreside power are plug-in capable, giving the company an F in this category. Furthermore, in 2007, two Royal cruise ships (Vision of the Seas and Serenade of the Seas) were each cited for one violation of Alaskan air pollution standards. Similarly, Royal’s Rhapsody of the Seas and Serenade of the Seas were each cited for one air pollution violation in Alaska in 2008. While Royal operated two ships with advanced sewage treatment systems in Alaska in 2008, it chose to discharge sewage from those two ships outside of Alaskan waters, thereby avoiding Alaska’s protective water quality standards, giving Royal an “n/a” for water quality compliance in Alaska.

Disney Cruise Line, (“Disney”), is an American cruise line founded by the Walt Disney Company in 1995. Headquartered in Celebration, Florida, Disney’s current cruise ship fleet consists of two large ships (the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder) built in 1998 and 1999 respectively, each with a carrying capacity of approximately 3,600 passengers and crew.

Currently, neither of Disney’s two cruise ships has installed an advanced sewage treatment system, resulting in a grade of F for the company’s 0% sewage treatment score. In determining the air pollution reduction grade for each cruise line, only ships that dock at a port that currently has shoreside power (thereby avoiding burning dirty fuel in port) were considered. In total, 0% of Disney’s ships that dock at a port with shoreside power are plug-in capable, giving the company an F in this category.  Neither Disney ship traveled to Alaska in 2008.  In 2009, Disney informed Friends of the Earth that it plans to install advanced sewage treatment systems on both of its existing cruise ships by 2010. Disney has also stated that when they launch two new ships in 2011 and 2012, respectively, both will include advanced sewage treatment systems as well as shoreside plug-in technology.
