David Brower launched Friends of the Earth in 1969 with the intent of continuing the effort he started at the Sierra Club to save America’s great heritage of rivers, parks, wilderness, and wildlife, but also to expand advocacy efforts to tackle the growing horrors of massive air and water pollution and chemical pesticides.

For the past 40 years Friends of the Earth has been a champion of clean air and water, fought false solutions to global warming and promoted clean energy options. With the help of our Friends of the Earth International network in 77 countries, we have protected human rights and precious natural resources abroad while here at home we challenged the policies of corporations that prioritize profits over human health. This year marks our 40th anniversary but likewise it signals a time of renewed hope and rising awareness of the value of life on earth.

Friends of the Earth’s 40th Anniversary Celebration

Erich Pica and Brent BlackwelderOn October 1, Friends of the Earth welcomed more than 200 friends and supporters to the House of Sweden in Washington, D.C. to celebrate 40 years of environmental advocacy, honor Dr. Brent Blackwelder and to introduce Friends of the Earth’s new president, Erich Pica.

The evening included presentations from Blackwelder, Pica, and others, including renowned artist John Alexander, who created a special 40th Anniversary poster in honor of Blackwelder’s retirement and signed copies of the commemorative poster for guests.

As Blackwelder spoke to the crowd, he reminded us of his ability to inspire action. His vision and ability to see emerging opportunities have generated unique and crucial campaigns that continue to protect our rivers, oceans, mountains, air, and wildlife. Brent has led Friends of the Earth in growing its international network to include groups in 77 countries. This global perspective has allowed Friends of the Earth to protect people in the U.S. and across the globe.

Blackwelder introduced Pica as Friends of the Earth’s new president. Pica has worked with Friends of the Earth for a decade and has led Friends of the Earth’s efforts to reform U.S. tax and budget policy related to global warming and energy. He has been at the core of Friends of the Earth’s fight against nuclear, oil and gas, biofuel and coal subsidies. Pica spoke of his plans to take Friends of the Earth into the future while embracing the same passion for change that brought him to Friends of the Earth a decade ago.
