This year’s sold-out Green Ball took place on Friday, May 15 at the lovely and historic Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco. The event helped support Friends of the Earth's campaigns to improve U.S. energy efficiency, promote sustainable agriculture, and protect both tropical and western forests from deforestation.
Green Awards were presented to Daryl Hannah, a life-long environmental activist, Joan Blades, co-founder of MoveOn.org, and Rachel Barge, Founder of The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF), a revolving green investment fund at UC Berkeley.
Highlights from this year’s event include special appearances from celebrity host Jayni Chase, Senator Mark Leno, Assemblyman Jared Huffman, world recognized environmentalist Paul Hawken, and Bay Area environmentalist and television host Doug McConnell.
Close to 300 friends of the earth enjoyed gourmet local and organic cuisine from Fork & Spoon Events, organic and biodynamic wine from Frey Organic Vineyards, craft beer from North Coast Brewing Company, and an organic signature cocktail courtesy of Blue Ice Organic Vodka.
Guests also enjoyed an event free of plastic bottles, with thanks to U.S. Pure Water filtration systems. Repurposed centerpieces were provided by Lila B. Design with event design support from Blueprint Studios.
Under the glow of the Conservatory of Flowers, guests danced the night away to music by Lord Loves a Working Man, a nine-piece band from San Francisco’s Mission District inspired by the raw and emotive sound of Southern soul and horn-driven rhythm & blues of the 1960s.
Guests had the opportunity to bid on eco-auction items including a stay at the Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino with a private tour of Frey Organic Vineyards, a stay at the ultra-green Orchard Garden Hotel in San Francisco, a two night stay at the greenest luxury hotel in North America, Bardessono in Napa Valley, and a five night stay at the environmentally friendly Jean Michel-Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort.
