Midterm election results: Greatest Congress the Kochs ever bought
WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the election votes tallied to reveal a Republican Senate majority, many progressive groups are bracing for an assault on environmental protections, clean air and water, and a deepening social divide in the nation.
Erich Pica, President of Friends of the Earth, issued the following response to the 2014 campaign and election results:
The legacy of Citizens United looms large and powerful in this election. With a tremendous amount of spending, the Koch Brothers have literally purchased the best Congress they could buy. It is now up to President Obama to pursue aggressive executive action on our pressing environmental issues, including climate change and clean water protections. President Obama has a responsibility to unify the Democratic minority in the House and Senate to oppose, and veto if necessary, legislative efforts that undermine Americans access to a just and healthy environment.
The election results change nothing, since Americans still care about smart climate policies and expect President Obama to champion them; and that means rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline, strengthening EPA regulations and making real commitments to renewable energy.
