Plug-In Politics

A landmark shift in consciousness is occurring across the U.S. as the public, government, and private sectors acknowledge the realities of a carbon-constrained world facing a major climate catastrophe.

Recognizing that over 30 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions come from the dirty and inefficient transportation sector, President Obama has highlighted plug-in electric vehicles as a central solution to combating climate change. President Obama has pledged to:

  1. put one million plug-ins on the road by 2015,
  2. ensure that at least 50% of all federal fleet purchases after 2012 are plug-ins, and
  3. convert the Whitehouse fleet to plug-ins (security permitting).

As a result, billions of dollars of the recent Stimulus Package (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) funding has been allocated to jumpstarting a market for plug-in vehicles, including tax credits of up to $7,500 for consumers to purchase plug-ins.
